I've left horn scale materials in neatsfoot oil for months
And have had a piece of horn tip in it for about a year already
It will absorb all it can then seems to stop making any difference

Thanks guys, I was concerned about the neatsfoot adversely affecting the metal. You have eased my concerns. I'll start soaking some razors tonight.

If you do a lot of horn, save and reuse the same neatsfoot, a good reason to keep it as clean as possible.

Got two pre 1891 oldies soaking tonight thanks to you gents, a frederick reynolds and a wade and butcher. I just wiped some spilled neatsfoot on another horn scale and it looked brand new.
