    You could skip the lathe and chuck it in a drill press if you have one.

    Well I tried Cutting the solid tips off of the horn today and instantly ran into my first problem.... there's large cracks in the horn and I have the odd feeling they run all the way through. Also ran into the problem of I don't think I can use a paddle bit to drill hole in this.... any suggestions for the proper drill bit for a good size knot?

    I cannot help with what to expect with the cracks. I would expect the only bit you are going to get a clean cut on that is going to be a nice sharp forstner bit. I presume you are wanting a hole large enough to set a knot in.

    wonder if a good soak in neetsfoot oil (after the turning or shaping is done) would help to lesson the appearance of the cracks should they still show when the work is done? If they are too wide perhaps some glue and horn dust would save the day.
