Thanked: 5First Straight Build
I am contemplating making a straight razor. So I have several questions before I proceed.
First a little background. I have access to a CNC Machine. The blade I plan on making will be a near wedge. I will be using O-1 for the blade. I have designed the blade and was wondering, as i will be machining the entire profile and blade faces. Would .010 per face be enough to leave pre heat treat?
If not suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
When it comes time to heat treat I will have to take it someplace to get done. How does 59-61 Rockwell C sound.
Thank you in advance.

Thanked: 5I have the blank all cut out. Now I need to modify my belt sander to start the rough grinding.
I will go with a near wedge grind, and see how it goes.
It will be a 6/8. I used 3/16 O-1 for the stock.

Thanked: 3226I do not build razors just hone and use them so take my comments for what they are worth. I like the look of the blade but the stock may be a bit on the thin side to get a bevel angle within normal spec for a 6/8 blade. Nothing that a couple of layers of tape won't take care of when honing though. That is if my calculation on geometry is correct and they may not be. Hopefully a builder will reply.

Thanked: 5Thanks for the tip. I plan on giving the top a chamfer. That will effectively reduce the contact areas down to 5/8 to 11/16. I literally just started straight shaving a little over a month ago. As I like tinkering, I figured this would be a good exercise in really learning about blades.
Thank you for the input. It is always appreciated. Positive and negative feedback is welcome. It hopefully will cut down on my learning curve.

Thanked: 3226You are welcome just keep in mind I am no expert. I think reducing the contact areas would work well. You might find the downloadable Excel file found at coticule.be handy.
Scroll half way down the page, it is on the left. Good luck in the project.

I couldn't get the link working so if all else fails just search honing a wedge.Last edited by BobH; 11-02-2016 at 06:26 PM.

Thanked: 5Started the rough grinding of the wedge shape. I will need to make a fixture of some kind to grind in the slight hollow. As this is all I have to work with.
