    Default Help! Broken ivory scales!

So we were cleaning the bathroom. The fiancé was moving some of my shave gear around. No idea what she did but when she opened the box here is what I saw.

Yes. It is the Ragg Paragon razor. I was hoping it was a different one when I saw it. Very bummed out.

Probably will send it out after the long weekend to see if it's fixable without damaging the ivory more.

I wouldn't say that it is unfixable. Have seen people epoxy toothpicks in to give support for the crack.

You are fortunate that the split has not had time to attract dirt. Carefully clean the split well with alcohol or vodka or acetone. Hold the crack together almost tightly. Apply the thinnest CA glue dropped onto the crack and immediately squeeze the split firmly together and hold it tight.
That has worked for me on a couple split scales.

You can in pin it and try a method I use on bone, horn and celluloid.

I super glue the parts together. Then cut two grooves on inside of scale. I cut a straight pin to fit in the grooves and fill with super glue. When dry sand smooth and re-pin.

    Good luck.

I would do what Geezer said. OTOH, Zak (Voidmonster) and Science Guy have done some remarkable repairs on ivory, tortoiseshell, and maybe bone IIRC. Shoot a PM to one or both if they don't come along soon.

    Default Help! Broken ivory scales!

I've reached out to Karl to get his thoughts. If he can't help, I'll reach out to Zak & science guy.

I'm afraid I'm just not handy for this.

Edit: Looks like I will be using Alfredo (Doc226) services. He recommends reinforcing with a thin slice of G10 to make the ivory more stable. Problem solved for now. Let's hope the results end up really well.

Oh man, sorry to see that. I'm hopeful you will get it fixed up, it seem like you are on the right track. I feel like this type of break might be caused by the razor being force down into the scales too far causing one scale to split.

It is fortunate that it broke at the wedge end and not the pivot. It may be unsightly, but at least it can be glued or pinned. If it was at the pivot I think replacement would be the only viable option.
