    I always use a drill chuck and make one side of the pin in the chuck, which leaves only one side to peen the piń on in the scales. Also I think the dome of your hammer makes a difference too. A more flat dome is harder to get the peen without hitting the scales.

    See! I tried that, but seem to do better dabbing a bit at either side.
