Cleaning up
Good evening gents.
I would like to have your opinions.
I will be cleaning up a razor next week. I was wondering. Do i keep original pins and have a less than perfect clean up or do i remove original pins and have a perfect clean on the blade.
Thx

It depend on several things I guess. What kind of razor is it, what needs to be done to it?
If it's a very special razor, like a family heirloom, think twice before doing anything to it.
Sometimes in order to correct certain issues you need to unpin, sometimes not. You have to weigh the benefits of unpinning against having non-original pins forever after.
Try to post some picture of it if you get the chance."Go easy"

If that were mine I wouldn't mind unpinning it. You can find pins and washers that look just like those and it should go back together nicely. I like having the whole blade clean and can clean and polish the insides and outsides of the scales, nice and fresh. All up to you though!

You wouldn't really notice the difference if you used the original collars, either.

Thanked: 3215You, may not have a choice, the black and pitting, on the razor, may be the early signs of off gassing, Cell Rot.
Before you invest any time in a restoration, see if the blade will take a chip free edge.
You can save the collars by unpinning with a Dremel and a diamond micro ball, offering you much more controlled un-pinning. Worst case, as said they can be reproduced easily, with a doming block and some Micro Fastener washers.
But if it were mine and I unpinned it, I would rescale it. The Bismarck inlay can be transferred to a new set of scales. Take measurements and photos for reference.
