    There are tests.

    Straighten out a paperclip, heat it till very hot and CAREFULLY touch it to the INSIDE of the scales.

    If it smell like burning plastic-it's probably celluloid
    Smells like burning hair-it's probably horn
    Smells like burning rubber-it's probably bakelite.

    That's the only materials I've ever used the hot paperclip test on

    Looks llike there are bug bites in the scales. As far as I know, bugs don't chew on plastics....

    that's what i was thinking. only seen horn with chips (or bug bites) like that. plastic just doesn't chip or delaminate like horn.

    Ivory makes a very specific clicking sound against your teeth. Don't remember where i read that but I've found it to be true..
