Thread: Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner

Just purchased an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and wondering if there is a problem cleaning plastic/bakelite scales?

I used an ultrasonic on a set of scales once. Notice I said once. It seemed to take the top layer of the bakelite off and dulled it down. They looked horrible at first. Polished them back into a nice shiny state. I put mine in for (2) 480 second cycles. Too much. Be careful!

I've been using 1 480 cycle for every razor I get in and have only had great results. Some dulling of some scales is true now that you mention it. I do use the chemical also.

Been using US for years. The Bakelite/rubber scaled are oxidized and the US takes off the oxidization which leaves the rough surfaces.
I have had no problems with any scale materials.
I put the cleaner in a plastic bag with enough water.
That makes cleanups a lot simpler.

Mind you, assure that there is something between the razor and the stainless pot. That is especially true for safety razors. The pot can rub off plating.

Our new ultrasonic warns not to clean plated metals, seeing most DE's are nickel plated how do you proceed?

Dawn dish soap or a similar citrus detergent. Not much...it is the water cavitation that does the work.
Plating on most jewelry is microns thin and most anything will remove it. I have a larger unit and have had no problems. Any abrasives will remove gold wash, like blade gold but water in the machine didn't fit me over a lot of razors.

Does this US take off rust too? Thinking about getting one for restores. Could someo e post a before and after pic of a blade?
