    Default broken horn scales

The scales on one of my razors cracked, right at the pivot pin. It's too bad, because I believe they were the original horn scales (the razor is a Wade & Butcher near wedge). I looked through the repair parts of the library and forum, but the only references to this specific problem I found were where people decided to replace the scales.

Is there a way to repair this? If so, how?

    Thanks in advance.
    Joel

This method has worked for me.

Unpin the Razor clean the scales and follow the three steps. You will need Superglue, two straight pins, cutting pliers and something to cut the grooves. I use a thin round pointed file.

Can you share a picture of the crack? I am doing a Tally Go both scales cracked at the pivot pin length ways with the scale. I used a punch opened up the crack and put super glue in there. Will sand and be done.

That should work. The only thing I do different is use a small 'C' clamp to keep the crack closed tightly.

It was a little tough to get a decent photo, but hopefully this will do.

The crack goes to the end of the scales, and it's lengthwise. It sounds similar to ejmolitor37's example.

I should add that I've never done any repairs yet, but I would love to begin, and I would also love to be able to save these scales. But I'll just need very clear, detailed instructions.

i hope superglue holds if those scales are saturated with oil...

Yes Sir that is what mine is like. I have mine apart but I bet this can be done just as it sits. I'd sure try it anyway.
Pretty much spread the crack every so gently, and use the least amount possible of super glue. Then press back together, I would say Bouchie is right about a small clamp to keep pressure on the area. I'd leave it set for a day at least.
Carefully with the glue so as not not stick the blade to the scales and so on. Also you don't have to get the crack open a mile. Just to get the tip of the applicator in and get glue in.
Any excess that might get on the scale can be carefully sanded off and all can be made nice again.

I have had horn scales soaked in neetsfoot oil and the glue holds. Don't think it will be a problem.

As with most of what we do patience is the key. You will do just fine.
