Anyone know how to differentiate between real mother of pearl scales and synthetic ones.

Thanked: 634No, but I can tell you they are synthetic. It is sold as PEARLEX.m if they were real I believe they would be lined and not all one piece.

Thanked: 4828One piece MOP scales would be rare. They make a product from real MOP that it small pieces laminated and glued together that is possible for this. The pin test will tell you righ away if they are a man made product, as in acrylic or such. If it is not some sort of plastic, my guess would be laminated veneer. They are pretty though. I have a Dovo with plastic scales that sort of look a little like MOP that are not nearly as nice.

Thanked: 3228Yes, I know that they are sold as PEARLEX and have a Dovo symbol on them. If they are old enough they could be real MOP according to this thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...ll-hollow.html . They look like the scales in the thread and not like the pearlex scales I have seen.

Thanked: 3228I emailed Dovo for on the subject to see whether they used MOP for scales at one time. I did get a reply which I will post if the author will give their permission to post it on the forum.

Aloha!
So true Hirlau!
I picked up these MOP scales a while back and am thinking about putting them on this Hibbard/Spencer/Bartlett OVB (Our Very Best) blade. The scales as they sit are a tad large so I may reduce them... but perhaps not. We'll see how it looks when finished. I have some work to do on the blade before I think about putting scales on it.
Are these REAL MOP? Well, if I want them to be, then I guess they are!

Mother of pearl, as the name suggest, is the inside lining of oyster shells. Ive seen razor tangs with MOP covering, but I don't think you"ll see a true MOP set of scales, unless its many pieces of MOP laminated to a substrate.
You can pretty much be sure if the Scales are made of one piece of material (not laminated) its not real MOP.
