Thread: Stabilized Buckeyed Burl/Acrylic for scales?

Has anybody used these new generation material for scales?
Do they hold up ok?

I have not used it yet but it will be my next purchase. The combination of materials sounds just fine.

My main concern is that being that scales are so thin,and do flex somewhat if the acrylic would stay bonded to the wood and not separate.

The other was what do use to bring them to a protected shine once the sanding to shape is done.I don't like the idea of CA as so many others do.
As a long time RC Airplane builder and user of CA I know it eventually yellows as well as becomes brittle.....it also doesn't like adhering that well to slick surfaces like acrylic.While it might cover it well the bond is not that strong.

Mike, aka MikeB52 has made some and then made matching brush and scales. It looks great. Some of the sets he has lined the scale with metal. I think you could also line them with very thin G-10. I believe there is a bunch of his work in the vacuum/pressure pot experiments thread.

I have used buckeye burl for several years now and like the way it looks and feels. It needs to be lined as it is quite brittle. I have lined mine using epoxy with black walnut, brass, nickel silver and knife liner. They all work, but I like the look of the metal liners best. I have also used 2-3 brass rods to secure the buckeye burl to the metal liners. Buckeye burl adds the beauty of wood and is a nice touch to old Sheffield restorations and even a Koraat IMHO. Certainly not a look for the strict traditionalists but still pretty awesome.

Such a beautiful wood.

I have my buckeye burl infused with polymer resins using the stabilizing process at River Ridge Products at Turning Blanks | Pen Blanks | Available in AcryliWood and Dymondwood. It takes about 2-3 weeks but is reasonable and great quality. They also offer Acryiiwood but not sure if they have the right size for straight razors. After final progressive sanding, all I do is buff it up to a beautiful shine. I have never had to use CA. Works great.
