Default What do you do with destroyed scales?

I got a cute W&B with a pretty blade that cleaned up very well, however the horn scales appear to have been eaten by a rodent of some sort. Is there something that you guys do with the ravaged scales? THese guys are way beyond repair.

You could do a forum search, "bug bite scales", in the search box upper right. That should lead to results similar to this http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...le-repair.html . If you could post a photo of the scales that would help too. Some really damaged horn scales have been resurrected.

It depends on how bad the bug bites are and where the bug bites are. It is quite a bit more work to fix badly eaten scales than to make new ones. However there is only on set of original scales, so if that has any importance to you, you will fix the old ones. The other thing that plays into it for me is what the old scales have for bleaching and patina. I have never been able to make New horn look old.

The scales have holes eaten right through them.

But I am proud of the clean up job that I did on the blade. I wish I could read what was carved into that one scale. Owners name, but I cant make it out.

Mixing epoxy with horn dust makes a good filler. You can repair any of them that still have a good pivot. Making new ones is way faster.
