Made my first ever scales
Although I've been restoring razors for a few years now, the one thing that has alluded me is being able to make my own scales. I recently acquired a Dremel scroll saw that was going cheap on a local community classifieds board. I've been playing around with it for a couple of weeks and when I finally got a piece of G10 in the post decided to give it a shot.
Having no artistic ability I just used an existing set of scales as a template. I cut and sanded away and ended up with something that actually resembles scales. Now the finish on them is definitely amateurish and hopefully I'll get better at it over time.
All in all I'm very happy with them. I put an old Gold Dollar blade that I'd modified a couple of years ago in them so it's now my blade (partially) and my scales.

Thanked: 4827Every journey begins with but a single step.
Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Soon you will have the finish and the wedge and pinning all dialed in, and a box full of options for constructing more.
It is a very nice start. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Thanked: 315They look great. It is hard to believe that blade is made from a gold dollar. I thought it was either a custom or some model I had never seen.
I've made some from black G10, but I wish I had used micarta as the G10 was a pain to polish and it ended up looking like a faded black/grey instead of the smooth jet black I wanted. If I remember correctly the micarta may be a little easier to polish.
Are the scales flat on the faces with a rounded bevel? Or did you try to make them (l shaped?
Either way, really well done.
