Thread: Devil spit starting

HELP!
I know there's probably 100 threads on this, but hoping to save some time.
Starting to see devils spit on the tangs of my
razors and am freaking out since they are all for the most part pristine.
Or at least were.
On some I can feel it with my fingernail.
Can it be removed without having to sand if it hasn't gone to deep?
What oil should I be using to keep this from getting worse?

There are a lot of different means of prevention. I have become a believer in VCI products, both emitters and paper. Also silica gel packs both for means of prevention. The devils spit is corrosion and as such to truly stop it is has to be removed, however you can slow it significantly without much effort. The stuff you can feel with your nail you can remove some or most of it with a razor blade. I like steel wool and polish, the 0000 is the finest and can get the corrosion with must healthy steel removal, but it does leave pits.

I too have wondered how to stop the nasty devil spit, though my thoughts were along the line of avoiding sanding it out.

So it can't really be stopped in its tracks with low RH and emitters?

How do those emitters work?
I figured a combo of things best. But just wondered about those tiny deep pits too, as I've seen some develop.

I know one thing for certain....I'm definitely going to start oiling them after each use.
But not sure what oil is best for the job.

The only issue I have ever heard of with oilingvthem is if they are not actually perfectly dry, then you have the risk of sealing the moisture in by coating it with oil. The most common oil I here people talking about is balistisol. I have given steel items in storage a very thin coat of Vaseline and even in our salty rain forest air it sticks in there forever an never dries.

Actual devil's spit is some strange stuff...I thought it took a long time to happen.

I use a razor oil sold by Fendrihan - I think it is a paraffin based oil. Seems expensive for the small bottle you get, but it goes a long way. I apply if after every shave after stropping on linen to make sure the blade is dry. It wipes off easily with a towel before the next shave.

I believe woodworkers also use camellia oil. I have seen it on Amazon.

I'm intrigued by this as I am having to keep several razors in storage at the moment. I'm keeping them in a closed wooden box with silica gel and according to the weather station sensor holidaying with the razors its 49% relative humidity in there. I guess I really ought to oil them as well and will probably wipe down with ballistol. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is less likely to seal moisture in but I could be imagining that.
I wondered what VCI was but a bit of googling has put me off. Not sure about realistic health risks but down at the bottom of this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volati...sion_inhibitor it suggests there could be problems with some plastics.

I don't oil, its caused me more problems than its worth.

Especially in the pivot area. I thoroughly dry, then place in a flower frog in the open position. 24hrs min.

Im with Outback. No oil unless im shipping a razor. You just never know what it will go thru durring shipping. And i leave it open to where the edge area is not inside the scales at all. Sit out like this for 24 to 48 hours. But i do ha e a safe place to do this. Some might not. Mine sit in an old shave cup with cotton rag in the bottom. Ive been looking for a nice frog, but havent found one i like yet.

I too would lime to see a pic of this. Devil spit goes deep into steel. Hard the imagine it happening quickly. Maybe you just seeing some discolorations starting.
