Thread: Kamisori Re-Grind

This is one that came in for HELP !!!!!! 911

As you can see from the before pic someone had used a Scrapper (Sen) to re-cut the hollow.
You see this on many of the older Kamisori, you often see the deep scrapes and the chatter marks because the scrapper is being used on Hardened steel



The particular Kami actually had enough meat to get it on my 2 x 72 using an 8" wheel to do a true Re-grind that doesn't happen often

Now on to the hones

Looks good. What grit did you use on the 2x72?

Damn Glen, I can’t believe that people doing that to thier kami’s is, “common.” I can’t even imagine what they could be thinking. And in spite of that, I can’t believe someone would think of fixing such a vandalized piece... lol!

I started at 80 grit, ended at 320 wet

It sure looks a lot better, nice save.

How often do you also relieve the flat side to allow a surface width differential between spine and edge. The original surface was about one wide at edge to three wide at spine to leaving less meat at the edge, allowing the better honing of the edge. Why ruin a good Kamisori by honing the flat to a plane surface. Ditto on microtomes.
Maybe tape on the curved side spine for honing would be ok, but not on the flat

There is no flat side

Both sides of a Traditional Kamisori (Wa kamisori) are hollow, they are just Asymmetrical

You could also re-grind the front (kanji) side but unless people really abused the honing they are rarely as worn as the backside
