Moisturizer those scale with several coats of thin mineral oil to take the brittleness out of them before you do anything to them. You could even soak the whole razor in a bath of mineral oil. As for the case, that type of leather work is a little specialized and if your friend is not sure, you could check with a book binder, as it is a very similar process. Everything as original as possible is the general rule. The rest of the advixpce give above is spot on.

Good save Bob. I was wonderi g about this but hadnt had a chance to check back.
If it scale is cracked dont try to tighten! I too have a nice 7 day set in ivory and im too scared to mess with the pins. Ive cleaned them up the best i can and honed them. Fixed up the box and called it done.
I wish we could help or comment on your pricing. Lets just say dont sell them. Look at othrr sets in ivory for a comparison.

    Hello,

RezDog - Thanks for the tip with the mineral oil. I have some in my shed that I used on chopping boards, so will soak the razors in it overnight.

Gasman - Do you shave with your ivory set? I have decided not to sell them, but will fix them up as a nice set for me use. You said they're nothing really special, so that kind of helped me decide. One side of the box is completely loose, the hinge is gone, and the original lock no longer works. I'm going to try and find an old box hinge and use it for the box.

There is barely any spine wear on the blades, so they're in great condition. I spoke to the seller and he said the box was found as part of a house clearance. They've been kept well, but from what I can see, hardly ever used.

Thanks for all the tips! I'm glad I checked here, as my first though was to rip of the 'cheap looking' scales and replace them with some nice ebony or redwood sets.

Thank heavens you did check here first. There is ivory and then there is ivory. IIRC when you see well defined lines in the ivory, Schreger lines, it is the better quality as opposed to just the plain white looking ivory scales. Enjoy using your nice 7 day set.

As to the hinge for the box lid. It would be typical for that age of a box that the hinge was made from leather and fabric. Typically it is not missing, it is torn in two. Many people do repair those by adding hinges.

I do use my set. I use all my razors. The set you have might not be a big well known name but it is an ivory set so its nothing to skoff at. Many folks would be very happy to have your set in there collection.

A couple pics of mine so you can see how the hardware on my box is. Maybe it will help you fix up yours.

As i said i just cleaned mine up. Repaired the box used cutting board oil on the box and mineral oil soak of the razors. Warning. Soaking the entire razor in oil will cause the piviots to feel looser as oil gets in the pivot. Its not a bad thing. Just do your best to wipe as much oil off in the end so it dont get on the material in the box.

Good luck. Hou found a wonderful set. A great way to start your collecting.

BTW, one razor is missing in the picture as i used it yesterday and I always let mine sit open for a day before putting them away.

I thought after finding a 7-day set, that would be enough for me, and I wouldn't need to buy any more razors...

But now I've seen some nicer sets, I know I'll end up buying some more!
