I’m still a philistine. I use two sided carpet tape and loosen it with WD-40. I work almost exclusively with horn and bone and it has not been an issue with the WD-40. The carpet tape does hold well enough that I would not take it apart without the WD-40.
    :-)
I did use white glue and thin cardboard once, then a quick trip under warm running water an it all can apart and cleaned off quite easy.

Thanks guys. It looks like the masking tape/ super glue method is going to work best for me.

There are two problems with double sided carpet tape and WD40

    1. Double sided carpet tape
    2. WD-40

Just wipe the bone clean with acetone, never had an issue with the thin 3m double sided tape to date on any material, split with a razor blade then clean it all with acetone again, always apply a thin coat of neatsfoot oil on all bone & horn on completion anyway brings everything back fine

    No tape.

simply make the outline of 1 scale, drill the holes, then drill through the pin holes, through the 2nd blank.
Drill 1 hole, put a screw through both blanks to hold them together, then drill the 2nd hole.
that way the holes line up perfectly.
put the 2nd screw it, and simply grind the 2nd blank, using the first blank as a guide.

    No tape or glue necessary.

I was going to use the tape for operations like thinning the slabs and I have been using tape for shaping small pieces for wedges.

    Addendum:
If you use the CA and tape method, be sure that you do not use freezer tape but only masking tape. Don't ask!
