DD Satinedge Scales
So I have a satinedge on its way in the mail, and she has broken scales. I was on masecraft last night looking at materials, and i'm not sure what color I should go with. I would like to try and match the original color as close as I could. I am also planning on using the old bolsters on the new scales. I'm sure someone has already done this and could offer some input. I have only made two other sets of scales so am no expert by any means. However I am a carpenter by trade so like to think I'm pretty good with my hands. Thanks in advance for any help my dudes.

Thanked: 13249DD Satinedge scales were clear when they left the Factory, Yes Really
DD Goldedge and Wonderedge left the factory with White Cracked Ice scales
The Yellowing we see now is due to the Catlin Celluloid breaking down
There are several threads on moving Bolsters and Inlays over going all the way back to the one Floppyshoes and I did about 12 years ago"No amount of money spent on a Stone can ever replace the value of the time it takes learning to use it properly"

Thanked: 3215Yes, there are several threads on Ducks, Acetone soak will remove bolsters, be careful they are thin. Clip off just above the bolsters and soak a few minutes, if still stuck on still wait a few more. They will come off easily eventually.
Do not try to pull them off, you will ruin them. Or use a paper cup and let the celluloid completely dissolve, remove the bolsters and toss the goop. I have done both ways.
10pups also did several restores with new scales, a few years back and posted some tutorials.
An advanced search for (Double Ducks, 10pups) will yield several of his duck threads. You might PM him for advice. I have seen his work in person, stunning.
Watch for cell rot on the razor, they are notorious for rot, which is probably why the scales are broken, very brittle.
You should see if you can get a clean bevel and edge on it, before investing a lot of time.

Thanked: 315I thought most clear celluloid ended up a darker yellowish color over the years like the Case Temperite scales.

I have a few sets of NOS replacement 5/8 Satinedge scales left.
Say DublDuck on one side, Satinedge on the other. Slightly yellowed, I suppose. Some shelf-wear, but I have polished the scratches out of some in the past.

I looked as closely as I could at the pivot area as one side is broken and it doesn't look like the steel is completely gone so I'm going to stay optimistic about the whole thing. I will definitely hone her up before even unpinning it. Thanks guys for responding, not going to lie, really don't like the search feature. It works too good, and I find myself getting lost in the depths of the forum. Spending hours browsing through it, learning everything except what I set out to learn, lol However that's probably just my fault for being so easily distracted.

Thanked: 3215I once met a guy who bought a warehouse of vintage barber supplies. He had over 100 Double Ducks NOS in tissue, in the boxes. All of them cell rotted.
I did buy a few, just for the bolsters, clipped them off and soaked them immediately after getting them home and tossed everything else.
I didn’t even trust the boxes.
Here's an old Jerry thread where he polished a Satin Wedge back to clear with Blue Magic.(Duck Au Naturel !)

I will move forward with purchasing materials once I find out the blade is not toast. So many options, also I am not going to keep it 100% original. Thinking jade green g10 scales, and gold leaf the stamp on both sides, with the original bolsters. The razor that is spinning in my head looks beautiful so I'm gonna try and follow my imagination on this one.
