No optical illusion. There are a number of minerals that have those qualities. One is Ulexite which is called TV Rock because it transmits images making them look like they are on the surface. Also Calcite var Iceland Spar is double refractive.

So... this mysterious stone just suddenly showed up for the pictures, and then vanished again, I assume?
