You could also line them with brass, instead of glass.
Oh, the brass idea might work really well for this job. Unlike you, I never learned glasswork from my dad!

However, I still have to screw my courage to the sticking point and fix that other razor that inspired your long thread on using fibreglass, so I may just do both of them at the same time when I have some leisure to do it right!

    Thanks!

Thanks everyone - this is very helpful. As I've said, a few months ago Outback posted a really good thread on fibreglass repair, which I have; I was more curious whether repairs on the top end were a good idea or a bad idea; it sounds like they're okay, so I am off to the races!

As requested, here are some pics. As you can see, the scales are very thin.

The broken off piece is in the shop, so no pics of that.

Yep. Not that that's a problem - it will just likely dictate which repair options are or are not possible.

If they were mine making new ones would be not much if any more work than a repair.

That being said they look like good practice so win or loose you would be ahead.

Great point. I do have a totally irrational fondness for vintage things, so I want to keep them on that count.

But you do remind me, I should really track down some bone and make some for a few other razors I have that have broken scales.

Does anyone know where I could source bone in Canada? Does anyone have any important advice for me on how to make bone scales? To give a sense of my competence, I would feel very comfortable making them out of wood, and I have all of the tools to do so, so mostly I guess I need to know what things you would do with bone that would be different than wood.

    Nothing that I'm aware of.

Rezdog has worked a bit of bone, he would have some insite to it, if there is.

I did a repair with CA, on a thin set of bone scales. Very thin, like yours. Over time it has changed color, and sticks out. But I've yet to try using talc, instead of soda.
