Thread: Finishing Up Some Projects

Well most of these are just some deep cleaning projects, but also working on knife handles for a client. He's going with a nicely figured curly maple that I'm going to stain an ebony color, and he wants a natural 'feeling' finish. None of that plastic crap were his exact words. lol So figure I can't go wrong with a boiled linseed oil finish. Also while I have the material right here, I'm gonna just use the same wood for the scales on a old Dovo that's unfortunately been just sitting around for way to darn long. Then finish with the linseed oil and be ready to start the new year with new projects.






Hopefully you can see the spots on the blades, these were some of my daily drivers for a while. They got put away for about a year so I could travel, and I must not have oiled them enough or something. Cause when I got home this January and cracked into them, a lot of them were starting to patina. Which I mean isn't a big deal, my favorite razor was with me the entire time I was gone. But figured it was time to get them outta the scales and actually give them a good cleaning/polishing.

Those cracked ice scales can turn easy. Be careful. The scales sure look nice. I will be looking for the new curly scales finished with linseed oil. I've wanted to try that with razor scales for a finish. Just never got to it.

They are always a PITA to work with, you just can't look at them wrong or make any sudden movements and your good.

Nice! What are you polishing with?

Mothers Mag & aluminum is my go to, works a treat.

Roughed out the shape with a coping saw, finished polishing on the others. Just got to finish up the shaping on the scales, and I can start peening everything back together. Then the real fun can start when I get to put some new edges on them.

Waiting for the oil finish. Coping saw? Yikes. That's like work. Oh well, I guess I did a few that way too before the power tools. I moved up to a scroll saw then a band saw. Much easier.

Now I wish I'd have bought a bigger band saw.

I would love a scroll saw, but I just don't really need it. I cut out the majority of the big chunks with a bandsaw then use the coping saw to clean off anything I see fit before taking it to the belt sander. But any who most of the shaping is done and am now seeing the finish line for these. Torn between whether to stain them or just leave them natural, staining them really does bring out the figure more in the curly maple though so probably go that route. Next pics will be with the stones hopefully.

Finally on the stones, still a little peening touch-up yet to be done to really lock everything down. But over-all quite pleased with how everything is coming together. This dovo has a heavier grind, which I prefer and the steel was a PTIA to sand so really hoping the edge comes up nice and keen. I will post a complete pic of all the ducks and this one, when there all done in the 'What Are You Working On Thread'. Thanks for all your help, and most importantly, the encouragement. Not sure I'd be this far without all you guys here on the forums. I'm not that good at taking pictures, so they really don't this old girl justice. The curly maple has this beautiful shimmer in the light, just simply gorgeous. Thanks for viewing!
