Default JR Torrey - "Mayfair" HELP!

I've got a nice JR Torrey Mayfair with translucent amber scales. I can't get an edge on the darn thing. I'm using Norton stones 1000, 4000, and 8000. Any advice?

    Thanks.

I've been working on my JR Toray (unknown model) 4/8 barber notch, for about an hour now... I saw what looked like a serated edge with the nekid eye and figured I'd be here a while... Well after 10 to 15 mins on the 1200 king I thought I was getting some where. So I checked the edge... (can we cry at these moments?) I hadn't even made it to the edge yet... So I got out the big stick... D8C DMT 320... That will show the blade whos boss... ya well I got to the edge and after 30 mins and un counted passes I managed to get rid of only half the chips...

    Oh ya back to topic...
Check to make sure your bevel is clean and all the way to the edge before you move to the next stone. Some steels are wear resistant and take a while to get the bevel set in the first place. If the bevel is not set properly... no amount of work on the finer stones is going to help.

Also, check that the blade isn't warped. I was trying to hone up a razor and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting the results I expected. I got the bevel to look good, but it wasn't getting sharp. Until I checked the blade and noticed the edge was warped.

What the chef said. In my opinion, bad bevels are the main cause of the "this razor just won't get sharp" problem. Sometimes it takes a lot of work to get the bevel fixed. The good news is that once you do, the edge will polish up in 10 minutes. And you'll never have to spend all that time again, unless you drop the razor....
