And on another note, I've noticed that many use a seperate wood type to space the bottom of the scales, is there a reason for this?

I actually used brass on both of these. I like a contrasting material for the spacer, although I've used a matching piece of wood as well.
The red/orange one is padauk, as was correctly pointed out earlier. The brown one is African mahagony. This is one of my favorite woods. It's very dense, so it has a nice heft. And it takes a polish pretty easily.

Did you have to touch that first blade where the etching is? Seems like it would be hard to keep all that if you did, but if in fact you sanded it- how?
