Blunt wade & butcher wedge
Can somebody tell me what im doing wrong.
Ive got an exellent condition 5/8 wedge that needed minimal cleaning But Ijust cant seem to get it to hold an edge. Ive tried every stone & pasted strop in my arsenal but as soon as it seems to be there when I strop it it just goes blunt agin .
Some help would be much aprieciated.Paul

I've heard that to hone wedges, you have to hone them with the heel leading at about 45 degrees. If you have Lynn's DVD, he shows this technique as well.
Hope that helps, and keep us posted!

First question and don't be offended, is how profficient are you at stropping?
If you know that isn't the problem, then I'd consider 3 possibilities...
1) did the razor get too hot while being restored, and lose it's temper?
2) have you looked at the edge under magnification, pitting corrosion etc will cause it to dull very quickly...
3) overhoned edge... does it feel smooth, but just glide over the hair?Last edited by Mike_ratliff; 01-25-2008 at 06:50 PM. Reason: spelling

I've got a TI that makes me talk to it too. I have found out that some razors didn't get hardened right. No matter what you do if its something from the forging or hardening process it's no joy.

Thanks for the info guys.
This 45 degree thing does that mean that You have to hone the blade with the spine off the hone to get the angle?.

Thanked: 150I have a handful of similar old wedges that were honed no differently than any other razor, and are the best shavers I have.
I would tend to think this is either a stropping problem or a bad restoration that messed with the heat treat.
Does the razor look to be reground?
And can you describe your stone sequence and stropping methods?

The blade has only been lightly polished by hand with autosovol chrome paste followed by honing with various stones,& after the reply advising that i lay the blade flat & lead with the heel ,Thats what i have been doing .So i guess its just more of the same.
I've not been stropping heavily either.
Thanks for the advice everyone.Paul
