I found the renaissance wax at the local Wood Craft store.

My answer depends on the wood. I use wax on woods like Cocobolo or Lignum Vitae that don't really require sealing or hardening. On maple, walnut, oak etc. I like to seal with plyurethane (2-3 coats) before waxing. For scales, funiture and other hobbies alike I have found this to be the most durable and rich finish.
