    I'm using it to do a set right now. Only bad thing is it seems kind of soft, so you just have to be careful.

    One trick I use when making pens from spalted maple is to use cyanoacrylate (ca) glue to stabalize the wood as I am working. One advantage of this is that it kind of plasticizes the wood so that you can polish it. I have actually used ca as a finish on some pens and other small turnings.
