Steel Wool vs Sandpaper et al
Lately, I've been reading a number of these threads and posts trying to glean as much info as possible before I actually go out and try my first full blown resto attempt, and I've noticed quite the paucity in steel wool use. Most of the artisans here prefer sandpaper and flap wheels, etc., but very few posts espouse the goodness of 0-0000 steel wool. Why?

hello,
I will use neither, prefer using electrolysis to do not affect the surface of the blade,
for scales it' s different, I ' use steel whool on dark ones with a polish past, but on clears I suppose steel whool could affect the original color

Steel wool is too soft. I found that out the hard way.
Anyone want to buy some steel wool?

Thanked: 1electrolysis ?
Please describe your set up. I feel really bad using abrasisves ,I'm afraid of removing too much stock. I assume this isn't used to remove unwanted hair.

Everyone feels this way at first. I used to be scared to sand a blade thinking I'd hurt it. Now sometimes I WISH I could remove metal so quickly! Really, it's hard to "damage" the blade beyond repair with sandpaper. Now if you are dealing with some fancy blade and etching, etc. that's another story!
