Thanked: 56there's not an exact recipe. I used walnut shell animal bedding, some turtle wax compound and then a 5 gm tube of 20 micron diamond paste from widget supply.

I think the tumbler is a great substitute if you don't own a buffer/polisher and time isn't an issue.
I get better results with my buffer/polisher and all my voodoo tricks and products at a fraction of the time compared to the tumbler but it takes some know how, makes a lot of dust and flying compounds, safety first, needs a good solid investment in buffer, wheels, products and is not meant for everyone.

Thanked: 5This whole process looks pretty interesting. I've missed some posts in the middle, but just to make a comment on people staying away from ammonia based media. Take a look at this: Nitridization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nitriding steel is usually done to harden the steel much more, and is done in a hot oven with ammonia gas that breaks down and allows nitrogen to penetrate the surface.
So in other words, I'm not sure that ammonia would have any effect on steel at room temperatures, and if it does it would only serve to harden the steel more.
On another note, once I get some razors to restore this looks like a much better option than doing everything by hand or dremel.

Thanked: 0sticky or tutorial?
Is there a tutorial on this? I've been wading through the thread and can't find a link to one.
I know you use walnut medium the first time around and corn cob media with steel polish the second time around. But what sort of polish/cleaner do you use in the walnut medium?
