Thanked: 14Bartmann restoration
Hi all,
i'm fairly new to all of this and this question has probably been asked already a zillion times but how do i clean up an old "rusty" blade WITHOUT losing the etching? The inscription on the blade says High Class and i'd like to keep that if possible.
Also: i'm not quite sure what kind of blade this would be..it seems pretty big compared to some others i have lying around but i'm not sure about those either
i'm guessing a 6/8 maybe 7/8

I know this blade. This is not an etching, this is stamped in the steel. So you not will have problems to loose it, if you sanding the blade.

This is a fantastic razor and it could looking wonderfull. The only special is, that it is a little tricky to sharpen. This is why it is from Manganese Steel.

Etching or stamps, try a dremel with a felt wheel and some Maas or Autosol or some type of thick paste steel polish. It is the least abrasive and will do the least damage. If you just want it clean with no black rust that will do the trick. OCD mirror polishes then you need to go to 220 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit sandpaper and then and somehow someway beyond.
No one else has tossed in their 2 cents about and idea I have re-invented (I can't take credit for it): http://straightrazorpalace.com/showthread.php?t=18054
I've had success that I've been quite happy with.
Here is what others do:

Thanked: 14thx Mark,
any idea on what this could be? A 6/8 or a 7/8?
it's the largest razor i have but i've read that 8/8 is extremely rare..
could i fuck up if i try to sharpen it or can i go just ahead and put it on my stone?
cotticule of 5 on 20cm

I'm of the opinion that the larger the razor, the more metal you have to get it right before it gets ground down to a nub. The steel is so hard that unless it is hooped you will get a razor shaving sharp long before you've done any insane. That being said, be sensible and follow what your research here tells you.
When I was learning how to sharpen I've probably ground a lifetimes worth of steel away. Who cares? Its my razor and I'm happy with it and they are supposed to last a few of lifetimes with proper care. So the way I see it I've still got 2 more lifetimes to get out of my one razor.
On other razors I've intentionally ground only the spine to make the bevel a little better, blasted out 1/16 ish of steel to get out ugly looking an nick to see if I could and had good success with both so far.
Clean it, sharpen it, test it, shave with it.
