There is one design floating around somehere that uses a flat piece of wood with a step in it to push the spine up against, and strong little circular magnets recessed into holes in the wood along the edge of blade to hold it in place.

But I just use a 2x4 for support and go real slow.

No, I got the scales almost done, and then switched to doing the polymer scales. I haven't been able to find another blade to finish the leather ones with. LOL But when I do, I will get it all finished.

Shame ... I'm just doing my first "restore" on a W&B, not going overboard with the shine factor on the blade but it feels like it needs new scales - it is kinda calling for something solid and old, at present I'm thinking oak but the idea of leather resonated well too.

Something that wasn't brought up (unless I missed it, of course) is instead of just dipping the leather into wax and then rubbing it, why not use boiled leather? I used to play in the SCA some years ago and know that this was a very authentic (and relatively easy) method of hardening vegetable tanned leather.

For those interested, there's plenty of good info out there to read, one of which is at http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~Marc-Carlson/leather/hl.html

Was actually just discussing this method with my brother in law ... Basically make leather armor and then cut it to shape.

    Here's something else to contribute.

Black Leather Straight Razor, Westfield, Germany - eBay (item 250258176541 end time Jun-22-08 16:24:00 PDT)

I think that the scales look like leather. Maybe? Its hard to tell with such a weird description.
