Thanks a lot, guys. John and Jimbo, will this naval jelly solution you're talking about damage plastic scales?

I've used a product called Evapo-Rust from Caswell that neutralizes rust.
It will turn it all black and then it can be removed, anything left is not supposed to get any worse.
I've used mine in an ultrasonic cleaner and it seems to work quite well.

ps: no problem with the scales being in the solution
