    Default Blade Colour?

Hi, I'm really really new but i've seen a few blades that had black or gold and i was wondering what they uses to make it that? The gold i can make a few guesses but not the black...

Secondly, I was wondering if you could say powder coat a blade? I wouldn't dream of doing it to an antique or anything but i like to think of different idea of custom jobs and was wondering if it would be ok to do that? But yah use like a Wapi blade and make it like perfect and then powder coat it something for example blue, and then hone it... does anyone know if that would be safe? or has been done/thought of before?

Really hope this is in the right place, thank you for your time,

It's my understanding that they "blue" the tangs just like they "blue" guns, giving them that black look - the gold ones have a gold wash applied, etc.....I've never heard of powder coating a straight razor or how well it work....I believe that type of application is baked on at high temps, which may mess with the tempering of the blade.

Mate you certainly could powder coat a straight razor any color you like... there are no concerns from a safety point of view and as far as applying the powder its a relatively simple process any workshop could do for you.

The only problem you'll run into is the on-going practicality of the finish.

I had a bowling pin gun (1911 45) with a powder coated frame in hot pink (dont ask) and the powder coat was rubbed off the rails right away because it would cause binding... but i was surprisingly hardy were it was left in the recesses of the rails and other contact areas.

The problem areas for a razor are the spine and the pivot... when honing and stropping the powder coat would be damaged along the spine and constant opening and closing would wear the coating at the pivot unless you used some kind of bearing to stand the sclaes off the pivot.

Anodizing is another option but has similar pitfalls... and doesnt suit all metals.
