    Default Help with a chip

Hi, I'm in the process of restoring my first Ebay razor purchase. Well, when using the dremel to polish, I put a tiny chip on the cutting surface of the blade. It's a small rounded chip about the size of half a seseme seed. So, is there a way to get rid of it (I assume I should)? Will taking it to my norton 4000/8000 do it? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    matt

Get a 1000 grit Norton. You'll loose all patience even with that.

So it sounds like it could come out, but it will take some time? If I used the 4000 side, what should I do. Lots and lots of passes? 30, 50, 100? After a while do I start over, like I'm honing it for the first time?

Second question. I learned about the pyrimad from watching Lynn's DVD and I know he starts with 3 and 3 to refresh a razor in good shape. But since I'm new to this, what should I expect from a razor off ebay that's not sharp. I don't know what I can expect as far as a starting point goes and what could be too much. Can I start with as much as 20, 30 or even more for the 4000 and the 8000? I did a couple 3 and 3 passes but so far it barely made a dent, I'm just afriad of doing too much? What kind of work should I expected to do on a ebay razor that's not very sharp.

    Thanks all!

Its a big unknown. Since you say its not sharp I'd start with an aggressive pyramid. Check out the sticky.

can you give me an example what an aggressive pyramid might be?

I found two tiny chips in my blade - should I try circular on the 8k or is that futile

That would depend on how big the chips are... but since i cannot see your blade i would suggest the 4K... Hone with slurry till you get past the chips... check the edge after every few passes so you know when they are gone.
    Then polish on the 8K

The chip is just barely too small to see with the naked eye - since I know exactly where to look, I can see a hint of something wrong in the edge, but with high magnification I can make it out clearly

Sure the chips may be tiny but this is still "subjective"... for example...
If you have a wedge or one of those thicker hollow ground blades, then still use the 4K for a few laps even though the chips are so small.
However if you have a thin full hollow blade then you can use the 8K with slurry and chips will be gone in a few laps.

All depends on how much steel you will need to remove to get past the ships in a reasonable amount of time.

Just for fun... you can remove a big chip from a wedge with the 8K.... but do you have the time?

There is no harm in trying to remove that tiny chip with the 8K... but if it takes too long... then its time to bring out the big gun... The 4K.
