    Default Dome Washers

Anyone ever find a supplier for small domed washers? I've got the instructions for DIY, but I'm trying to save time for the more enjoyable chores, ie, scale making.

Domed washers are made, not sold. They're easy to make with a small round die and punch set called a dapping set. You might get someone here to sell you some premade, however.

You can get a cheap dapping block here:

I ordered one the other day but it hasn't arrived yet.

Let us know some details when it arrives. Is there no punch to go with it?

They have punches listed as a separate item but its a set of 12 for $10 and seems excessive considering I would probably only need a couple. If I can't find anything else that will work I may try them out later.

I have a dapping set and have domed several sets of washers.
There is a general problem with this process however as I find that I by the time I tighten the pin adequately to hold the razor on the pivot end the domed razors tend to be a lot flatter.

The doming tends to work a lot better on the other end where things don't need to be quite so tight from a peening perspective.

I have been thinking about whether to comment on this or not, but Robert did it for me basically. I used to do domed washers like this with a "dapping block" type thing, but did find (especially with adjustable pins) that the washers would give under the stress of tightening the pins. Even to the point of not being domed anymore. If the pressure was too much, they would even sometimes sink down a little in the center causing it to look... off.

I think a much better idea is what Bill Ellis and Vlad do/did. Vlad wrote about it in a thread somewhere but I'm feeling too lazy to find it. You can do a search for his posts. Anyway, it is basically smashing down a 3/32" tube to the size of a domed washer and works wonders! The washer ends up being solid all the way through and looks great.

Looking at old Sheffield washers, I think that is how they must have been made originally - tube squashing.

Incidentally, I have made bullseye washers by turning them from solid, but it is tedious, fiddly work.
