Thanked: 7Automotive Clearcoat??
Has anyone used automotive clearcoat with sucess finishing scales? Seems like it would work, but it seems like most guys here use epoxy and CA. I know the cost of the clear and hardners are high, but I used to paint and have some laying around. If the wood is fully covered, it would be waterproof, and then you could use car care products to shine them up periodically or remove the occasional scratch. Any thoughts guys???

Thanked: 7I've sprayed some with clearcoat - it's certainly as viable an option as anything else here.

I have no idea what it would be like on scales, but I think it would build up to heavy and thick on the scales to make it useable. I have sprayed automotive clearcoat MANY , MANY times and is is very hard, which is good. It would seal the scales very well, just don't know about the buid up.

Thanked: 7One of the more common finishes around here seems to be epoxy - which puts down a much thicker coat than clearcoat. If the epoxy is working for folks, clearcoat should be able to as well. I don't know how well the pivot area on the inside of the scales would hold up though...it's probably worth finding out.

Thanked: 0If I had an extra set I could have them sprayed in our booth at work. Heck, maybe I could even get them custom painted. :LIGHTBULB!:

Thanked: 7I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Clear the scales, scuff when dry, and airbrush a design or highlights-whatever, and clear over that. A kandy could also be used...
