Thread: Grinding the edge question

I have started restoring some baldes. I have one (W&B) which I took a little chip out of the edge when I dropped it. So, I took the lilttle stone dremel attachment to the edge to even it out -- think making a 7/8 into a 6/8. I just angled the grinding attachment and went up and down both sides until the edge was staight again.

My question is: is there any harm/danger to doing this? Will I be able to hone it now, in less than 10 lifetimes?

I have done it before, and have recovered good shavers. As long as you don't overheat the edge and wreck the temper, you should be OK.

I'd probably play it safe and go back to a 1000 grit stone with circles.

Last night I used 400 grit wet dry sand paper laid flat on a table and held in place with water. That worked well also.

You didn't ruin the blade unless it turned colors from the heat. With heavy razors, this should work OK, but a Dremel might chip a thinner one. It will take quite a while to put the bevel back on. I suggest 400 or 600 grit wet/dry paper, like Mark mentioned.
