    Simple answer is that all the other solvents that will disolve nail polish take too long to do so and/or leave a lasting residue.

    I wish to take this post to add yet another use for acetone.

    Diluting/thinning Epoxy:
    Thin the resin to the consistency desired, then add hardener to the mix under the assumption that the resin/acetone is actually all resin. The extra hardener is important, I've experimented with this. Using only enough hardener for the resin actually present causes 5 minute epoxy to harden in 2 hours. This fact may or may not be usful. Lastly, mix your epoxy in a glass container (I use dollar store shot glasses) since the acetone will disolve a plastic cup in less than a minute.

    Well, I found it very useful in cleaning the crappy brown paint someone had used on bone scales....
