    Default I have begun...

Well last night I began on the road of razor restoration. I got my ebay lot in the mail and started right away.

My first project is an aprox. 6/8ths Joseph Rogers and Sons wedge. It is in what I assume to be horn scales. They are translucent yellow and seem to be flaking in areas. They look like the mineral mica, how it has sort of a flaky layered look. I will post pictures later.

I now understand how long this can take. I started with 100-120 grit paper. The rust and patina came off right away which excited me but still after more than an hour sanding there is still the pitting. In my head I imagine a mirror smooth wedge and I dont think I'll be happy 'till I get there. It's tempting to break out the dremmel but I dont want to risk ruining anything.

Let me ask you guys, is it mandatory to sand down the wedge until all the pitting is removed? I mean aside from the concept of the pitting leading to rust sooner. Will the pitting effect honing or the blades ability to hold an edge?

Unless the pitting is along the edge it shouldn't matter. Purely aesthetics.

That's good to hear. the more I look at it the more I kind of like a little pitting, I think it gives it character. I'll make sure atleast the bottom 1/4 inch or so is pit free.
