I know anything solid is sandable, but my question is will sanding an impressed (a 32nd or 64th inch deep) name off an old celluloid scale ruin its appearance?

If I sand it off, will I be able to smooth the surface out so as to not leave an ugly sanded-looking spot on an otherwise sweet Wade and Butcher Special.
