    Default Is celluloid sandable?

    I know anything solid is sandable, but my question is will sanding an impressed (a 32nd or 64th inch deep) name off an old celluloid scale ruin its appearance?

    It would be cool if my name was Ira Bratton, but it's not!

    If I sand it off, will I be able to smooth the surface out so as to not leave an ugly sanded-looking spot on an otherwise sweet Wade and Butcher Special.

    It's sandable. Start with around 400 grit to get the name off, then progress to 600, 1000 and 2000. Finish by either a quick buff with some acetone or Maas/Flitz/Simichrome or the like.

    I would scrape it off first. I find scraping with a flat wood scraper that has a nice burr on it or even the edge of a stiff blade gives me more control when removing much stock in a tight location, such as when a piece of stock sustains a burn while sawing. But I don't want to discount what Floppyshoes has said. Yes, it is certainly sandable.

    Sanding wet is good, too. Use regular automotive wet/dry paper. Celluloid will sand and buff up to a high gloss pretty easily. You'll be impressed with yourself.

    Just be careful about heat buildup as you sand. Too much heat and you know what happens to celluloid.

    Whew! I'm glad I found this thread this morning. I sanded a few celluloid scales and made them pretty again. But yesterday I heard about a thing called celluloid rot. And I started getting paranoid: "You screwed up, Self. Why did you sand celluloid? You might start some crazy cellular breakdown chain reaction!"

    It's good to read that JE says it's okay. =)
