Lee Valley project wood discontinued
Hi Gents.
I just got back from Lee Valley buying their 3x24x1/8 project wood for scales, and they told me that I had better get what I wanted now because they've been discontinued. It doesn't show on their website, but they're not ordering any more. I got enough wood to last me for a few years, but for those of you who were thinking about stocking up, now's the time.
Happy wood hunting,
Mark

The lady at the store said that they were being discontinued due to "lack of demand."
All I can suggest is to get what you need now, as well as write Lee Valley asking them to continue supplying the project wood sheets. I already sent mine in...

Really? damn.
I better go load up.
Update:
I emailed their customer service regarding the issue and here's what I got.
Thank you for your inquiry. We regret to confirm that these project woods are being discontinued, but not due to lack of sales. The vendor is downsizing and is shutting down the wood supply portion of their business. We are in the process of looking for a replacement source at this time, but have not found one yet.
We're sorry that we don't have a more positive response for you today. Should you have any further inquires please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Shannon Brown

So, hopefully they find another suitable supplier.Last edited by ToxIk; 05-24-2008 at 12:20 AM.

Try Rockler
Rockler also sells this stuff, and they have local stores in many larger cities. You can get enough for 4 sets of scales for $4.

Thanks Fritz...but Rockler is only in the U.S.A. The good thing about Lee Valley for us Canadians is that it was local and we could go to a brick-and-mortar store and avoid paying the absorbidant shipping costs.

I get my wood in plank. I cross cut it to the length I want on the table saw and then recut it on the band saw. I have a ½ inch blade just for ripping blanks.

I can see that could be a good way if you do lots of scales (or other wood working) and sell. If I'm just making some for my own use and perhaps a friend now and then, having it come 1/8" thick and S4S is a real benefit. I've got 3 in the air from open_razor now, and one vintage Solingen that I'm using but really does need some nicer scales, but even with that I'll probably only average one set per month over the year. Fortunately, you can get by with a few inexpensive tools if you're only making small quantities and have lots of time.
