It's the dust. Sparks coming off a piece of steel and showering the feathery stuff that we look to judge carbon content by, are at least the welding temperature of the iron, about 2700 degrees F and some estimates are higher. The last couple of thermit burns I witness were started with simple sparklers, like you let your kids play with on the 4th of July. All it takes is the right conditions.

I'm sticking with the 3M half mask. Thank goodness my OCD for neat is coming in handy. I can't stand a dusty shop.

The rubber part is VERY comfy, feels like a gummy worm.... nice and soft with a very good seal.
You'll know it because the rubber is transparent blue.
Just to make sure, is this one here what you are talking about? $34.95 sounds pretty good...

If it is cutting into your face you are pulling the straps too tight. I wear half and full face a good share of my time at work and have had many boring hours of training in all forms of breathing PPE. We wear them for chemical protection more tha dust meaning if they leak we die. Just put on the mask and pull it snug then do a +/- pressure test by putting the palms of your hands over the intake then the exhaust ports. If you detect leakage tighten the straps a little. Also keep in mind that they are not one size fits all. We have two brands three sizes each at work to choose from we then have diferental pressure fit test to insure fit. My brand of choice is a North I also like the 3M. And like I said they dont have to be super tight to work.

I wear the blue rubber mask with the twin canistors so long as it seals its ok ,it dosn`t have to be that tight.I certainly need it while making shell scales, however when I`m sitting at a bench or at the grinder with my head down for quite a while( a day or so ) I tend to get a pretty sore neck because of the added weight I guess and I have to have a couple of days break
If I could find something that is light and works as good as the canister type I have ,I would be very interested
    Kind regards Peter
