New Razor Scale Wood - 1/8" x 3" x 24"
All -
Awhile ago I asked you questions about an ideal size and desired species of wood for razor scales. Many of you gave us some great feedback and in return we are trying out a new size in our Birdseye and Curly Maple. If it seems there is interest in this size (1/8" x 3" x 24"), we will inventory more species. As for now, you can buy online at www.bellforestproducts.com, click Birdseye or Curly Maple, scroll down to see this new size.
We ship internationally and if you want to see what shipping would be, add products to our cart and click 'view cart'. The shipping estimator automatically gives some estimated values.
Thanks for all the great response! As we improve our site and grow our warehouse, we'll keep you posted!
(also, it is my privilege to say we are now a sponsor of this site!)

so if we get some of these you'll consider doing some of the other ones this thin as well? do you also stabilize? thanks.

Indeed, if there is a demand, we will consider offering this size in other species.
A group "bulk order" could be made at anytime, for any specie (pending we have that specie in stock and it is adequately dried). To make it worthwhile for us, and you, to create a bulk order, we would probably need to mill up at least 50 pieces of 1/8" x 3" x 24", in the species desired. Then, we could ship out the bulk order to different people.
As for stabilizing, we currently send out stock to get stabilized for our pool cue blanks. Our inventory is random and we don't really have a good handle on providing stabilized wood at this time. When our engine gets running a little smoother, we will be looking into bringing this service in-house.

Thanked: 735How about just offering a "we'll cut a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 24" block into 1/8" thick slices for a "X" amount fee"?
Testing the waters with a single species (maple) may not be the best way to evaluate the desire for this service. For me, I enjoy darker hardwoods, so I'd like to be able to choose some cocobolo or some such and have it sliced to 1/8" thicknesses.
Currently I have been using Rockler, as they have a pretty good selection of 1/8" thickness woods (plus there is a store on the way home...)
Anyhow. Keep up the good work. You certainly offer some high quality woods, a very nice selection.

I agree with Seraphim. Personally I already have both birds eye and curly maple. I don't even plan on really getting more once I use up what I have also. For me, it's the more exotic species that are interesting for scales. I think the cutting fee is a great idea if you can't just "carry" other woods in 1/8" sizes.

I can go for that as well.. I lack the facilities and the tools to cut pieces down to 1/8" but I'd be willing to pay a little extra for it to be cut down for me.

Thank you for your feedback.
We are willing to offer more of exotics in 1/8" thickness in the future, but for now you can request a custom cut. Basically, the way this works is you call us with an order. Lets say you want a 1.5" x 1.5" x 18" piece of cocobolo cut into 1/8" pieces. Our shop fee is $60/hour, minimum $15.00. In the minimum time we could probably cut three 1.5" x 1.5" x 18" pieces of wood into 1/8" scales.
Each 1.5" x 1.5" x 18" would yield about (6) 1/8" x 1.5" x 18" scales.
The cuts would be done on our bandsaw and would not be planed or sanded to a perfect smoothness. The wood would have slight bandsaw marks that would need to be further finished by you.
If you would like to have any of that order further sanded or planed, that option is available, but the shop time would increase.
Hope this helps!

Excellent.. so essentially $15 plus the cost of whichever wood is selected.
