Blades:
1. A couple of the blades have EXTREMELY tiny nicks take out of the blades in various places. Will these be taken care of through a simple honing on a stone?

  • 1000 grit stone, lots of work. Maybe even a coarser stone, or wet dry sandpaper laid overtop of a stone.

2. There are some scratches on the blades, what is the best way to take these out without affecting the mirror finish of the rest of the blade?

  • can't do it. start all over again,

3. What is the best way to remove simple tarnish or gunk buildup?

  • try maas and a cheap rag first. then try maas and a felt pad on a dremel. after see 4.

4. What about removing rust?

  • sand paper in varying grades

5. What about light pitting?

  • see 4

Scales/Pinning:
1. How can I safely remove the pins from my razor so that I can clean both the razor and the scales more effectively?

  • good luck. I'm only ok at it. 1) drill them out. 2) file them off.

2. Can the pins be reused after they have been removed, and if not, where can I buy replacement pins?

  • 1) no. 2) a) classic shaving.com, b) adjustable washers, c) make you own.

3. Is there certain cleaners that are better for cleaning celluloid that others? Is there any specific compounds that I should avoid?

  • Maas works well. Not that I've heard of. My experience says that it has to look like tooth paste. Stainless steel cleaners (i.e. fridge doors) don't have enough - or any - grit.

4. On the Dubl Duck: It appears to have brasswork on the scales. What is the best stuff to clean this with. Also, is there any way to restore the goldwash on the blade?

  • Maas. Restore gold wash (beyond me). I'd say nuke it. Mirror finishes are nice anyway. There is a way though - electroplating or something I think.

5. At least 2 of my razors sit slightly off center in the scales, how do I fix this (I'm assuming it is due to the pinning job)?

  • try 1) running them under hot water and stretching them out, then cold water to set them.
  • after that doesn't work 2) try tapping the pins on one side only, sometimes this further warps the pin internally and pushes the blade back to alignment
  • after that doesn't work take them apart, flatten them (hotwater idea or ironing them light) and re-pin.

Also, at least 1 of them is loose and does not properly hold the blade open.

  • tighten them by tapping lightly.

All this being said, do the research and you'll get more out of it that the brief overview based on my own experience (which isn't much - check my post count ).
