Thanked: 953Dumb Pin question
I got an old T Hessen Brook & Co. which shaves great, but I warped the old scales with hot water. I replaced them with some simple white plastic dovo scales from classic shaving, which looks nice and works fine, but I'm new to installing pins and it's not all that tight - and as a result if I'm not careful it closes onto the scale. I don't think the blade is warped bec it closes nice if I hold the pin and close it carefully. But how do I get a tight seal on the pin? I basically used a plastic mallet to get the washer to slide down the pin and clipped it, but any simple way to get it tighter?
Interestingly, I think the blade is wider than what dovo had in mind, becase the plastic tube a third of the way dwn on the inside of the scale doesn't come close to touching the other side of the inside of the scale, but I dont' think that's the culprit here.

Thanked: 13249I am not seeing where you peened the pin at all in your post,,,
The Dovo pin system is rather easy to use the locking washer that they supply works very nice but you still have to peen the pin in there,,,
Slide the washer down the pin so the cup is toward the scale then push it as tight as you can get it on there, clip the pin, file so that there is barely any thing of the pin showing (the washer will crush as it tightens) and tap away with a small Ball Style Hammer...... DONE !!!!

Thanked: 953That may be the problem. I read your excellent pinning posts before doing it, but I unfortunately hadn't seen your discussion of dovo replacement scales, so I hadn't seen your explanation of how to get the washer down the pin. The washers wouldn't go down at all on mine, so I tried a hammer which didn't work, but a rubber mallet did because the nail embedded in the mallet, allowing the mallett to push the washer down to the scale. My guess is I probaly warped the washer by hammering it so it may not be locking properly. And I have not done much peening (which I think is the filing), but I suspect that's lees the issue than the locking mechnanism.
Any idea whether I can get the same washers in a hardware store, or do I just need to order them from classic again?

Thanked: 13249For future reference and for anyone else using the Dovo sets!!!!!
Use either an old scale, or any piece of wood, or plastic, with a 1/16 inch hole drilled through it, to press the Dovo lock washer into place on the pin....
Cut it off, then file, then peen with a light weight ball style hammer.... Tap, Tap, not hammer, hammer....Last edited by gssixgun; 10-02-2008 at 06:36 PM.

If you want to drop it in the mail, and pay shipping, I will put it in a set of multi colored Gens scales (new) that I took off a nice Wacker Bartmann razor. They are sitting in bag full of factory scales leftover from custom jobs. It will take me all of 5 min to pin it.

Thanked: 953Heck yes! That's very generous. And those scales probably will fit better since they were desigend for a 7/8s. My THB&C is a hefty 6/8s. Can you PM me your address and what I should put in the envelope for shipping. THanks!
[incidentally I wacked out the pins a few times and it did help alot, so my inadequate peening is the issue as glenn identified]
