Thanked: 14African Blackwood
Has anyone used this wood? I found it on exotic woods(Exotic Woods :: 1. Information :: Wood Descriptions) I love they way it looks and i'm hoping to rescale my project Henckels with it.
Any information on using this wood or "word to the wise" from the experienced would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanked: 0African Blackwood
Detach: African Blackwood is one of the densest and heaviest woods known. It is used in making clarinets and handles and is one of my faves for the handles of sgian dubh knives.
It is getting increasinglty harder to fine and more expensive and I believe it is a member of the rosewood family, not related to ebony.
It is very stable and not as prone to cracking as ebony.
It would make superb scales...seal it with gunstock type products, like tru oil. However, it is oftn left unsealed, though I would not recommend this. It takes a fantastic polish with 600 grit.

I made a set for a Genco razor for my son. It was fairly easy to work with and looked really nice when done.
It a very dense wood and makes a great set of scales
