    Default Holly scales

Has anyone ever worked with Holly? I was looking at some online the other day and I like the very white color the wood has. Not sure about the hardness or the workability of it tho.
    Any info would be appreciated.

BTW this is for holly wood from the tree NOT Holly Wood who works at the corner of Hollywood & Vine. So you have to remove yer minds from the gutters. After all I need room to get by

I have never successfully made anything from it. No fault to Holly, I just fumbled. Not cheap by the bd. ft. so i put off a project or two. I messed up ripping a pen blank for a one piece set-which is quite pushing it to get scale length from a pen turning blank T know.

It is very tight, fine grain- often near invisible, medium hard, consistent density. Harder and more dense than Bass, less hard than say boxwood or dogwood. The color is not always so white nor the grain super tight. If those features a real important it pays to dig through a pile. It really is quite nice when it qualities are put to best use, carving, fine detail. I understand it is sometimes used to mimic bone.
