Thread: Rubbing compound polishing

Salutations comrades!

I have two Swedish razors that i bought on tradera (the swedish ebay). And they need a little polishing and honing. I just got Lynn's DVD (great vid btw) and he mentioned in the restoration section that you can use Turtlewax Rubbing compound but that the he didn't like the consistency, but I did find there is a liquid kind of the rubbing compund. What do you think about using turtlewax rubbing compound, the original or the liquid for polishing my razors?

I would want to use the Maas but it is impossible to obtain in Sweden, and i'm not very keen on ordering it from abroad with all the shipping costs.

I don't know about a liquid but I do use the green bottle Turtle Wax rubbing compound. Wouldn't go without it. It's one of my favorite restore ingredients.

Yep all 4 types are part of my arsenal The paste style in the little tubs of rubbing and polishing and the liquid style in the bottles....

Ok, which one do you think works best? I only need it to get the dirt off and the shine on.. one of them has some rust on it what should I use on this?

Rust = sanding of some type.... I haven't found that miracle compound that takes off rust ...

If I had to pick one for cleaning razors it would be the pastes.....

Just pick up whatever metal polish/rubbing compound you can get locally. They all work fine but you and I may have a different preference and thus I might prefer Flitz, Maaz, Mothers Mag polish and so on and you might prefer a 3M liquid auto type rubbing compound. They are all pretty much the same in use... I've used 5 different ones and in the end they all seem to produce the same results. I might prefer a cream style if you insist on having my opinion but if all I could find was liquid, I'd not be the slightest concerned.

The comment about rust is correct, if you have to deal with rust/pitting and want it all removed, you will have to do some sort of sanding to remove it all as you have to remove the metal surrounding the pits if you want to make the surface smooth again. I have done both and I have left pitting on some blades because to me they are just users and as I could get the bottom of the fairly shallow pits rust free it wasn't worth the additional effort to me, the others had such deep pitting that I had to sand down to clean metal to avoid further rusting in the bottom of those pits.

Autosol is the metalpolish I use, I pick mine up at the local Clas Ohlson store.

Personally I think that Turtlewax PREMIUM rubbing coumpound is better than a lot of other options. It works extremely well. The premium is different than the other one though so make sure it is the premium. Also make sure it is the premium RUBBING and not premium POLISHING. They all look similar. Thanks for the Autosol reminder, Bjorn.... I remember seeing it in Norway when I lived there and I do have a tube of it here... works as well as the others.

As for the Turtle wax brand, here's what I found available in Norway... not quite the same... or is it?!?! Impossible to tell as packaging and descriptions change from market to market. Either should work fine.

I'd say it's definitely not the same. Turtle Wax's Rubbing coumpound (not the premium) in the US looks similar except it is mostly white I think. Similar container though. Also, since the writing is in English they would put the one extra word on it if that were the product. The premium is different enough to make a difference IMO, but as always- use what you have at your disposal and make it work.
