What you may find!
Just a picture of what I found during honing a blade! Not long before this I thought I was nearly finished.
There was just the tiniest of a chip left & a tiny black spot nr it, a few passes more & this.
Took a lot of getting out but did it eventually. Just shows you never know what’s under the surface.

Man, I HATE it when that happens. Especially when you get an eboy special almost ready.

Good thing you caught that before you put it to your face.
I always examine the edge of every blade closely before I begin honing, and then once again before I test shave.

Thanks for the pics. Yup, IMO, pitting at the edge is the kiss of death for a razor unless you can hone past it. Razors I consider not fit for shaving are the ones where the corrosion and pitting exists at the edge and runs away from the edge more than I'd be willing to hone past. Pits become holes, holes become chips at the edge; over and over unless like you said you can hone past them.
BTW, great job on the silhouette lighting. My stereo microscope has that option and I ALWAYS flip to and from that setting throughout honing sessions. It's amazing what it can reveal that the above lighting can't in many instances.

Cheers I have to magnify things now as at my age the eyesight isn’t that good even with glasses.
When buying razors I take an 8x – 15x Ruper loupe with me to check them out.
I also use it when honing to check progress.
