Thanked: 37Ipe for Scales
I came across a piece of ipe wood (Brazilian iron wood). It is by far the heaviest wood I have ever seen and I am a carpenter. Has anybody ever used this stuff before to make scales?

Thanked: 3795I recall a while ago someone had some left over from building a deck and made scales out of it. Unfortunately, I don't remember who it was.

That would be me. I took scrap IPE decking and ripped it down on a table saw. The wood is VERY stable and VERY hard but I liked the results. The finish is Tung Oil.The blade is an NOS 8/8 Friodur.

Nice job, Lt. I really like that angled scale look.

Thanked: 37How is the balance? Is it thrown off by the weight of the wood?
BTW I totally dig that brass trim.

Nope, exceptionally well balanced. Just FYI, those scales were about 3/16" prior to sanding, the word isn't easy to work with and splits easily. But will finish real nice! The wedge is 2 slices of 3/32" brass with a honduran mahogany spacer.(it still needed some work when photographed ) Here is another pic of the razor.
